Fisherman Math Constructed Response

Fisherman CR

Have you ever had to do a project using real measurements? Or, have you ever had to make a "REAL" model of a constructed response? Have you ever used real supplies for a project--like fishing supplies? If you are wondering what this is, I will talk about it. Read on to find out more about this!

At school we had to make a life size model using real measurements based on a constructed response (CR) my class did. There were groups that did their own models. We had to use about 3 long chart papers to fit all of the information (more than 6 feet!). We used a vertical number line to group our information. In our Fisherman CR, there were 5 things we had to accurately place on the vertical number line: the fisherman, salmon, tilapia, catfish, and hook. We had to label our number line and convert the feet below surface for each fish. After, we labeled the number line with the fish, the fisherman, and the hook's maximum reach. Finally, we had to answer a question that should be based on a real life situation. The answer paper that was used to grade our CRs was based on measurements, not a real life situation. In conclusion, this is what our Fisherman CR was about.

Next, after a few days or a week, our teacher told us that we were doing a life size model based on our Fisherman CR. Our groups were the people on our table. First, roles were assigned like the fish drawer, the drawer for the model, the person who answers the question, and a few others. Like the CR that the class did, we had to make out vertical number line. But for the model, we used real measurements; yard sticks for measuring feet. We also had to draw and color fish, the fisherman, his boat, water, and his hook. This was like the CR. Our group's name for the boat was S.S. Narwhal. The hook was very cool for the model because we used real fishing supplies for the string and hook. Then, we placed the objects on the model and drew extra objects like a sunken ship. Finally, we had to answer questions that was assigned. In conclusion, this is what we did for the model of the Fisherman CR.


During this model of out Fisherman CR, the IB Learner Profile we exhibited was KNOWLEDGEABLE. We exhibited this because during the mini project, we had to remember and think about vertical number lines. We had to remember about positive and negative numbers or else our project would be wrong. We also had to be knowledgeable when converting the fish's feet below surface. In conclusion, we exhibited the IB Learner Profile KNOWLEDGEABLE during the Fisherman CR project.
