Book fair

Book fair

Do you love books?

If you do, then then you’re going to love this blog!

Every year Keone'ula Elementary School (KES) has a school book fair in our library (our library looks like a pencil).

It's awesome-they have all the latest books such as:

Guinness World Records 2014
Magic Tree House
Dork Diary
National Geographic
The Percy Jackson Series
And so much more!

The book I was looking for didn't come out yet so I was kind of bummed out because the author Rick Riordan, writes awesome books that makes you want to keep reading. I did get this zombie sticker that I put on my skateboard-it looks pretty cool!

What books do you like to read? Comment below to let me know!

There are even posters-from cars to your favorite singer. We had this guessing game for the whole entire school-whoever could guess how much mummy wrapping was on this fake hand could win a free poster of their choice. There are winners every year!

My favorite genre of book is far-fetched fiction because it doesn't happen in real life. What about you? My favorite series of books right now is the Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan. You should give it a try.

"Cultural postcards you say?"

"Cultural postcards you say?"

In our class, we love to learn more and more. Our teacher made us do a little presentation to the class showing our different cultures and facts about it. We shared what our culture(s), eat, wears, how they speak, and more! With this, we learned a lot more about each other and about ourselves.
Now you are probably wondering, how did we present? Well, we wrote all of our information and placed pictures on a half piece of paper. It was like a postcard!

On it, we shared pictures of food, clothing, and students also translated some words into the language that their culture(s) speak. Students made the background really colorful. I drew the flag of my culture as a backdrop. I really liked the way it turned out!

This task made us even more educated with the world around us! We learned a lot more about Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, German, and many more! I think that we were all surprised about how much we can learn from one piece of paper! I've learned a lot about my culture and who I am. I am Filipino and I personally thought that I knew a lot about my culture, but it turns out I only knew 4% about it. Crazy right!?

I think that we were all really happy that our teacher did this because now we respect each other more and we became really educated about this topic. Everyone worked super hard on this and you can tell that we all put in a lot of effort into this because students presentations were really detailed and thorough. I wish that we can do more things like this in the future!

“Go! Slow! Whoa!"

 “Go! Slow! Whoa!"

Are you having a hard time thinking of healthy food choices?

Are you also concerned when you don't know if certain foods are healthy or not to eat? Well, you are reading the right article!

This article will teach you how to organize your food choices and will also help you eat right!

First of all, we were very lucky to have Presenters from St. Francis to come and teach us about Healthy nutrition. Ms. Frazier, Ms. Jose, and Ms. Lei came to teach us valuable information about choosing the right foods to eat.

They created this program called “Go, Slow, and Whoa." It is suggested from the U.S National Heart, Lung and blood Institute for the kids to think about the kinds of food choices we make.

First of all, “Go foods” are foods that are good to eat almost anytime. This is the healthiest ones, such as skim and low-fat milk, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Next, "Slow foods". These foods should be eaten sometimes. They aren't off-limits, but they shouldn't be eaten every day. At most, you eat them a couple times a week, such as waffles, pancakes, and white rice and fruit juices.

Then, "Whoa foods". These foods should make you say exactly that- WHOA!!!! These foods should only be eaten on special occasions. If I were you I wouldn't recommend you to eat too much of this because it is obviously unhealthy or least healthy and most likely to cause weight problems, especially if they eat more than usual. That is why “whoa” foods are eaten on special occasions such as your birthday. Examples include deep fried fries, deep fried onion rings, and even fried fish!

In conclusion, the “go, slow, and whoa” program will definitely be a great reminder to keep yourself prepared and organized when eating.

FIREDRILL!

Have you ever wondered what it is like to have a fire drill at Keone' ula Elementary?

Well, when you have a fire drill here, you don't shoot up out of your seat and rush out the door and off campus; in fact you don't go off campus at all.

When you hear the ringing of the fire drill, you calmly stand up out of your seat, push in your chair, and WALK QUICKLY to your designated area.

Why do we push in our chairs? Wouldn't that take longer?
Actually, you need to push in your chair so your classmates don't trip or fall, and have a hard time getting to the designated area.

Where do you go?
Usually, while we are in class, we take a route through F building, and go on to the recess field. If we are in during lunch, we go to the Basketball Court.

But a cool thing is--they try to trick us. If we were in the library, and we had a fire drill, but the door was blocked off, where do you think we would go? We would go the back door. Or if we were in a different classroom, like Music, we would also go through the back door as well.

Tip Time!

Try your best to go to the bathroom, during recess, lunch, and before and after school. What if you were in the bathroom and the fire drill went off? What would you do? I would hurry out and join the line of classmates at the designated area.

Well, know you know how our fire drill system works! Bye!

Blurb!!!!

Hi! My name is Kayleigh, and I was your author for this article! I love to dance, draw, and read, and my favorite color is Cyan! Bye!

Lockdowns: Shhhh!

Have you ever been in a lockdown? If you haven’t, then you really need some tips and advice. For or more information, read ON!

Tips:
-Be quiet!
-When we have a lockdown we have to be silent and just sit in our chairs.
-Our teacher (Mrs. Matsuura) tells us to be quiet, stay calm, and take this seriously.
-If you hear somebody trying to open the door, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!
-We practice doing lockdowns in our class just to practice; even without the announcements on the intercom.

Other amazing tips:
-Do not go crazy if your principal says it's a lockdown! Just relax, calm down, and just be silent.
-Also if the lockdown is real, you have to be extra quiet and put your head down.

Thank you for reading my blog and see you next time!
