IXL 

Have you ever had a hard time doing math or practicing it? 

If you have, the website IXL will help you greatly improve in topics and other things that are part of math. IXL is a website that our school uses for homework and to help us improve in our math. There is a wide variety of topics to choose from. Some topics in the sixth grade area are whole numbers, multiply and divide decimals, algebra, exponents, square roots, and measurement. There is a ton of other topics too. This is what IXL is if you don't know. 

Now I will tell you about doing one of the skills. When you press on a skill on any of the topics, there will be problems for you to solve. While you are doing it, there is a timer to see how long it takes you to do the skill. There is also a scoreboard that tells you what your score is. Your score goes up every time you have a right answer. If you get it wrong, your score goes down. I always try to get 100% because you get a medal. This is what happens when you are doing a skill. 

Next, I will tell you about the awards section of the website. In the awards section, there are achievements or awards that you get whenever you do a certain amount of skills or when you go on for a certain amount of time. Each grade has a whole new set of new awards to get. The cool part of the awards section is that the picture that you are awarded can become your picture of your profile. 

Finally, I will tell you about the IB learner profile that you use while going on IXL. You become THINKERS. You are thinkers in this website because you have to use what you know to solve problems. You sometimes have to use critical-thinking skills because once you get to the 80-100% area, the problems get hard. This is how you are thinkers in this website.

Report Cards!

Report Cards!

It’s that time again---Parent/Student/Teacher conferences! This is when your report card is revealed. 

Your report card holds all the grades you get in EVERY subject. It also shows your tardy & absences. Another thing that your report card shows are your GLO's.

Some examples of the GLO's are: 1: Self-directed Learner, 2: Community Contributor. GLO stands for General Learner Outcome. Teachers grade you on how well you showcase each GLO. 

Now let’s get to the real grades. Usually I get good grades like MP's and ME's.The way our school grades things are: ME, MP, DP, WB. ME stands for meets with excellence. MP stands for meets proficiency. DP stands for developing proficiency, and WB stands for well below. The good thing about this report that we got in first quarter is that my grades can get better and better since we still have time.

You know what’s awesome? You could be rewarded for your ME's. For example if you go to Ferrell’s and show them your report card, you can get a free clown sundae. Same thing goes for Fun Factory. You can get 40 free tokens on you card! Now I really want good grades!

To get good grades you need to be Reflective. Reflective means “I think about my own work. I know when I've done well, and when I could've done better." Basically, you just need to try your best and turn in your best work.

In conclusion report cards are very important.

Teacher Survey

Hi guys! 

It’s Janus and Joseph! We are here to talk to you about the Teacher Survey you may have taken. 

This is when students take a test on what they think about their teachers. On the test, kids fill in what they think about their teachers—good or bad.  

This is want we felt like taking the test:

We felt that it was really easy and fun to do. HALLOWEEN PARADE

HALLOWEEN PARADE

On Halloween morning at Keone'ula Elementary school, everyone wore their costumes because we had a fun parade!!!!! 

It started at 8:30. We got to have extra fun because we got to walk with our book buddies! They were in costumes like us but kind of kiddie-ish.  

6th graders are mature so we don't make rude comments about any costume.

Substitutes

Substitutes

Do you ever play around in class when there is a substitute? Do you pay attention to your sub? For more information,  read on!

Tips when there is a substitute:

In 6th grade we get consequences. Some of our classmates will get a notepad so they can write down who is doing good and who is doing bad. They have two sides. One is a good side and other is the bad side. If you are always on the good side then you are good, but when you are on the bad side, then that is really horrible. If your name is written more than once, then that means you will have a check or strike. 

Our teacher Mrs. Matsuura doesn't give the students checks or strikes who are on the good side. So they have no consequences.

Please try your best not to get the sub angry. If she does, she will let your teacher know that you were not paying attention.

You also have to show INTEGRITY. Integrity means that you are doing the right thing. So if you are on the good side then that means you are showing integrity by following directions and listening. If you are on the bad side, then you should try your best to show integrity to the sub and your classmates next time.

My opinions about substitutes:

I know that there are great subs and there are bad subs. I know good subs because the sub is very gentle and also strong enough to tell the class to be quiet. I can tell if there are junk subs because if the class doesn't quiet down and if the sub's teaching skills are confusing….I know it will be a long day.

Are you that kid who always wins in art contests?

Are you that kid who always wins in art contests? 

Well someone in our class did--it was me!! Since our class is the class who always enters art contests, we always find talented artists! Do you want to know how to win an art contest? Since this class is the master of art contests, we are more than happy to teach you.

First of all, you need to sketch with a pencil. This step is extremely important because, making mistakes can waste paper and can also ruin your whole paper. I like to use a pencil first because I can just erase the mistakes quickly and easily without getting bumps on your paper. Using pen can also be a bad idea because one little mistake can ruin your whole art piece.

Secondly, you will use a sharpie or a black marker to outline or cover your pencil marks. This is extremely important because no one wants to see a paper with so many lines and marks. After I outline my pencil marks, I will erase the left over pencil marks because as I said, nobody wants to see an unorganized art piece!

Then of course, you will color your art piece with, “NO WHITE SPACE!" I just made that quote bold because it really is worth it. If I were you I would NEVER EVER select or vote an art piece with lots of bare spaces. I think that coloring with no white space can make your art piece eye-catching. 

In conclusion, you have learned the steps on how to draw an organized and neat art piece. Don't forget to draw or sketch with pencil first. Then, erase your pencil marks after outlining your picture with a sharpie. Lastly, coloring your picture without any white space (except the eyes, or the clouds, or anything that is supposed to be white.) is really important. I am a finalist in an art contest called, “Aloha’s Harvest 2^nd annual Compassion in Art”. I drew a picture about helping the homeless and less fortunate people in Hawaii. My teacher is very proud of me!

Do you know about AVID? AVID stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination.

Do you know about AVID? 

AVID stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination. 

We use AVID to help us keep organized. When we take notes, we either take 2 column notes or 3. 

The sixth graders got to see a presentation about AVID. Two AVID students from Ewa Makai Middle School came to talk to the sixth graders about AVID. 

They went over the types of notes they take in middle school-like Cornell note taking. They also talked about AVID elective classes. They talked about writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading. 

In this AVID class, they do a weekly binder check to see if you are well organized. Mrs. A. Matsuura did this last week and it went very well! 

This AVID presentation really made me more organized. They even gave out sign-up sheets if you wanted to join the class---I signed up!
