Reading Campaign

Hey guys-Mark here. This month I'm going to be writing about the reading campaign. So basically the reading campaign is a reading goal that we have to meet in order to go to this fun celebration that we have at the end of the school year for those who meet or exceeded the goal.

The reading goals for grades 3-6 are 3 fiction and 4 non fiction for first to third quarter. But in fourth quarter we only have to read 2 books each. Ya, I know what you’re thinking--that's so little bit! Well actually, we have to read 175 pages to equal one book. And yes we can read other things like articles. For 3rd grade 8 articles=1 book, 4th grade 10 articles=1 book, 5th grade is 13 articles= 1 book, and for sixth grade, 15 articles=1 book.

We even have our own button to show off if we met or exceeded the goal. If you met, you get a silver star but if you exceed you get a gold star. For the design of the button, we have a drawing contest.  It's divided into two groups K-2 and 3-6 just to make things fair. This year my very own friend won the contest! Dhaydren!

And we even have our own chant! We chant it at every awards assembly. The teachers start it- WE LOVE TO READ, YES WE DO! TEACHERS LOVE TO READ, HOW ABOUT YOU!? Then it goes on to kindergarten-WE LOVE TO READ, YES WE DO! KINDERGARTEN LOVES TO READ, HOW ABOUT YOU?! Then they point to 1st graders and they chant except they say 1st grade and point to 2nd grade and so on and so on until 6th grade. And at the end, the whole entire school chants to their parents and say WE LOVE TO READ! YES WE DO! KEONE'ULA LOVES TO READ! YOU CAN TOO!!!!!! It's really fun because when each grade chants they try to compete with each other to see who's the loudest. But I’d say we're the loudest!

We have to be self-directed learners to meet/exceed our reading goal because it's up to us weather or not we want to read and become more knowledgeable. I recommend that you read. And even if you’re off of school, keep reading. I know I love to read. And you can too!

Kupuna Morrow-Learning about Hawaiian Culture!

Do you like to learn about many interesting Hawaiian histories and beliefs? We are so lucky because we get to learn from our Kupuna Marrow! In this blog, I will tell you three things I found interesting from her stories, about the islands, and beliefs.

First of all, I was very interested about Pele; the fire goddess. When I first heard the story, it made me want to hear more about it because she is the volcano goddess. She controls the volcanoes-she decides if they will erupt or not. She is one of the most known goddess in Hawaii.

Secondly, my favorite time during Hawaiian studies is when we get to do arts and crafts activities such as the dancing Santa. I enjoyed crafting with the class while listening to Kupuna's stories.

Lastly, my most favorite thing during Hawaiian studies is when we dance traditional hula and even sing traditional songs too. I sometimes have the anxiety in myself but I sometimes just have fun doing these fun activities with my classmates.

In conclusion, these were my three favorite things at Hawaiian studies and I hope to learn more and do more fun activities this school year.

2nd Quarter 6th grade Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee

Have you ever had a spelling bee? If not, I will tell you what it is.

I will also tell you how it might feel like. This will also help all 5th graders if they will go to the 6th grade Spelling Bee. If you want to know more, read on.

First of all, a spelling bee is some type of contest where you are given a word to spell. If you spell the word right, you are still in the game. If you spell the word incorrectly, you are out. Also, you can ask to repeat the word. You can also ask for the definition of the word. Finally, you can ask for the word in a sentence. These three things will help you better understand the word and also help you spell it. It may feel frustrating while in a spelling bee because some words might be really hard. Overall, these are some things about a spelling bee and how it might feel like.

During a spelling bee, you need to be Thinkers. One reason why you need to be thinker is because when you are given a word, you might have to use what you know to try and spell a word. Some things that you can do is sound a word out or to put a word into syllables. You also have to be thinkers because if you don't know a word, you might have to think of what letters make more sense when you spell. These are the reasons why you need to be thinkers during a spelling bee.

Finally, I will tell you about the spelling bee that we had today on January 15th. During the spelling bee, there were about 25 students participating. It was challenging because some words weren't taught to us yet. Also, sometimes we forgot how to spell some words so we would have to sound it out.

                                      Erika's Parents stopped by!

Overall, this 2nd quarter spelling bee was fun but also challenging. Now you know what a spelling bee is and how feels like.
